Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said the Congress party has always preferred young blood at its helm.
After a day-long Congress Working Committee meeting in New Delhi on Monday, Mukhejee said, 'Younger people should come forward. Older chaps cannot continue forever.'
He was answering to a question if Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will be given more responsibilities to pump in younger blood at the top level.
‘From 1960-2005, see how many changes were made at the highest level of the Congress till Sonia Gandhi assumed charge. It is unlike other parties like the CPM or the Bharatiya Janata Party [with a stagnant leadership],’ the minister said while giving his party’s position on young leadership. ‘The Congress has a tradition of pushing young blood,’ he said.
The Congress Working Committee, which was held after a gap of more than a year, was attended by 98 invitees.Â
