Women sweepers pulled out of ‘unsafe’ Delhi roads!

The civic body has also ordered all concerned officers to submit compliance reports within a fortnight.
‘For the security of all women sweepers it has been decided that as far as possible no woman sweeper should be deployed on major roads of Delhi,’ said Nagesh Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Department of Environment and Management Service (DEMS) of South DMC in an order issued on 21 April.
‘Officers are also directed to make alternative arrangement to pull out female staff from major roads and ensure that work is not adversely affected,’ added Kumar.
The corporation manages sweeping and garbage collection in area spread over four zones- South Delhi, Central Delhi, West Delhi and Najafgarh.
‘It is a precautionary measure by the department in the light of complaints by the women sweepers,’ said Mukesh Yadav, Director (Press and Information), who is also chief labour officer of
South DMC.
Yadav, however, said no major incident of harassment of women sweepers have taken place in recent times.
‘There have been instances of snatching, theft, eve teasing and abusing though. Thieves go to work early in the morning when main roads are mostly barren,’ said Subhash Arya, leader of the house in South DMC, who is currently in Amritsar to campaign for senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.
The civic body is responsible for cleaning major roads under its jurisdiction as well as arterial roads, streets, drains and garbage collection bins.
