Trilokpuri remains tense, no new cases of violence reported

The police have detained as many as 100 people and 44 have been arrested. Three FIRs have also been filed against those who were involved in the clashes.

According to the police more than 30 policemen have been injured in the incident so far. Locals were restricted to their homes due to the prevailing tension. Heavy police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed in the worse affected areas of block numbers 15, 20, 24, 26, 27, 35 and 36 where stones were  hurled on Saturday morning.

The police have also imposed Section 144 in the worse affected areas. Meanwhile, the security agencies on Sunday staged flag marches and kept strict vigil in those areas.

There is a severe crisis of food amongst the locals as all shops are closed and residents are almost in a state of starvation.

‘The supply of essential commodities, including milk for our children, has been stopped. We are running short of food due to persistent tension in the area,’ rued a local.

The members of the family said though the situation was under control, yet they feared to venture out of their houses in fear.

‘I have not been able to open my shop for the past four days even after the situation is somewhat normal here, now. My business has got seriously affected and I am struggling to earn my bread and butter,’  said a local, who runs a grocery shop in the area.

The police also said tough action is being taken against the rumour mongers. As many as 12 people who allegedly made bogus PCR calls have been arrested in this regard.

‘We received more than 500 PCR calls since the tension erupted here. However, more than 180 calls were found to be bogus and baseless. We detained many such callers and will book them as per the law. We will not tolerate rumours. There are some anti-social elements who not only mislead the police but also create tension by making fake calls and using social sites and Whatsapp for the purpose,’ said a senior police official.

On Friday night, Trilokpuri was on boil after  two communities pelted stones at each other. After a brief lull, clashes erupted again and five people were shot at on Saturday evening. Three of the wounded were identified as 16-year-old Ajit, who has a back injury, 15-year-old Arjun, who is in a critical condition with a head wound, and Praveen, whose age is not yet known.

The whole of Trilokpuri area, divided into 36 blocks, is being manned by more than 1,000 security personnel — some from Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Forces. Over 30 police vans, water cannons and riot control vehicles have also been deployed.

Some of the roads where clashes have taken place were strewn with stones and broken bottles on Sunday. The police will take a call whether to lift Section 144 on Monday only after the situation normalises in the area.
