Describing its first indigenously developed petrol engine which was made at the Pune plant of Tata Motors as versatile and the heart of Tata vehicles with many future applications, Ranjit Yadav, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, said, ‘It will apply to global markets since petrol represents a big opportunity for us and we are looking at the same amount of market share as diesel (9 per cent to 1 per cent) for this family of engines.’
‘There is a huge demand for fuel economy, reduction in toxic emissions and this Revotron Series has been designed on extensive feedback from car-owners, enthusiasts and expert drivers across the globe in the area of combustion, boosting, friction and calibration, besides testing in grueling conditions in India, UK and Korea,’ he said, adding that this series will include 3-and-4-cylinder petrol engines. Developed by using a range of eco-friendly and future-oriented technologies, the light-weight yet powerful engine is equipped with modern water-cooled high boost turbo-charger comprising stiffened crankcase to minimize noise, vibration and harshness, refined intake/exhaust sytem with combustion noise reduced further by ‘silent-steel’ oil pan, and - another segment-first - selectable multi-drive mode, he noted.
Tata Motors has launched the engine at time when the gap between the petrol and diesel vehicles is narrowing, owing to partial deregulation of diesel prices. The government has also indicated it intends to give complete autonomy to oil marketing companies to determine diesel prices. Yadav said the new engine will be used in the compact models like Indica and Indica Vista. The first model with ‘Revotron’ will be launched this year, Yadav said but declined to offer a timeline or the model where it will be used.
He, however, did not share other details like production capacity or facility from which the new engine will be rolled out. ‘We have a number of facilities from where the engine can be churned out. So, capacity is not an issue.’ The engine has been engineered to deliver optimum balance of power, performance and fuel economy and is a truly global product, Yadav said.
The company worked closely with global engine consultant AVL of Austria and key technology partners like Bosch, Honeywell, Mahle and INA to bring in the latest technology for the new series, he added.
