South MCD buys 5,000 dustbins to implement Swachh Bharat Mission

In a major initiative to improve sanitation infrastructure, the South MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) has purchased 5,000 swanky steel dustbins, to be installed in markets and public places to ensure garbage is not littered on roads.

During its budget meeting, the civic body also announced to launch ‘Integrated Sanitation Management Plan’ on first day of next finical year 2015-16.

“The shopkeepers and their customers litter garbage on corners of the market or on the road. It’s a big hindrance in the way to implement Swachh Bharat Mission. The dust bins will help a great deal in maintaining cleanliness,” said Subhash Arya, chairman of standing committee in South MCD. The dustbins will soon be delivered and installed, he added.

The corporation has also proposed to construct 94 toilet complexes under PPP mode, 282 common toilet complexes and 357 road side urinals.

“In addition to this, two garbage recycling plants will also be set up and land has already been purchased for the same”, Arya informed.

The chairman also increased the budget for Swachh Bharat Mission from Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore. The standing committee also approved construction of 800 toilets in primary schools of the corporation.

Besides this, the corporation has proposed to open gyms in all its 104 wards. Interestingly, the corporation has also announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for the best ward in each of its four zones.
