SC rejects AI petition, govt toughens stand

Despite the Supreme Court refusing to entertain the government petition on the pilots' strike, Air India terminated 25 more pilots on Friday for not reporting to work, thus taking the total number of sacked pilots to 71. It also has started process of cancelling the license of the striking pilots, asking the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to take action.

As the stand-off continues, the civil aviation minister Ajit Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. 'I updated the PM on latest developments. Whatever we are doing is according to the government policy. He has asked me to ensure that fares should not be increased because of these strikes. The Cabinet has approved huge amount in the turnover plan to save Air India, but Air India family should understand and co-operate,' the minister told reporters.

On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain Air India's request for starting contempt of court proceedings against  the striking pilots and advised it to sit with its pilots and sort out the differences. The Delhi high court had on Wednesday had declared the strike illegal.

Meanwhile, the striking Kingfisher Airlines pilots called off their strike on Friday after getting an assurance from Kingfisher chairperson Vijay Mallya and have decided to report for work.
