Satish Upadhyay emerges as main contender for Delhi chief post

Senior BJP leader Satish Upadhayay is emerging as front runner for the post of Delhi BJP president. The senior leaders of the party and various fractions are reportedly gradually giving their consensus.

According to sources in Delhi BJP the name of Satish Upadhayay is almost final for the post of Delhi BJP chief . Upadhayay is presently chairman of standing committee of South Delhi Municipal Corporation and represent Malviya Nagar ward in the corporation. He was chairman of education committee for two consecutive times and is considered an intellectual face in the corporation.

Upadhaya has earlier served as Vice-President in Delhi BJP, and also on various posts in ABVP, the student wing of BJP, for several years. Upadhayay is considered to have backing of present Delhi BJP president and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and also enjoys support of ABVP and RSS cadres in the party for his clean and performer’s image. Besides Upadhaya, former DUSU president Ashish Sood, who represents Janakpuri West ward in South MCD, is also a strong contender for the post. ‘I am hearing these news from the media only. I have not been personally approached, even party workers have started congratulating me,’ said Upadhayay.

He, however, added that he is not averse to the post and bear the responsibility with his dedication, if trusted. The only obstacle in the way of Upadhaya is considered, the other lobby in Delhi BJP lead by former Delhi BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel.

The party office is also abuzz with a woman president this time. ‘We don’t had any woman president in Delhi. As participation and contribution of women workers and office bearers have increased in Delhi unit we hope the party trusts a woman this time,’ said a senior woman BJP leader.

If party goes for woman president, besides Mehra, New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi, former Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi, and former North Delhi mayor Meera Aggarwal could emerge as main contenders.
