Thanks to a LPG transparency portal, launched by Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas S Jaipal Reddy on Friday, it is now possible to keep track of VVIP misuse of the subsidised cooking gas. The portal helps in monitoring the consumption pattern, booking status and details about distributors.
According to the portal, while Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit consumed 42 cylinders a year, Vice President Hamid Ansari's official residence in New Delhi has apparently consumed 171 subsidised LPG cylinders up until 31 May.
But industrialist Naveen Jindal takes the cake when it comes to high consumption. He has bought 369 cylinders in a year, which would mean more than a cylinder a day.
Heavy Industries Minister, Praful Patel consumed 41 cylinders a year. BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain's used up 56 cylinders, while Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur used up 161 cylinders.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna used 83 refills of 14.2-kg cylinder at his Mathura Line residence in the national capital, BJP leader Rajnath Singh consumed 80 cylinders and former Union minister M S Gill 79. In Mayawati's name there were two connections. While the one registered under Mayawati had consumed 45 cylinders, the connection registered under Mayawati Kumari had used up 45 LPG cylinders.
Reddy, who launched the portal, gets more than two refills per month. As per norms, general public is not allowed to book a refill within 21 days of delivery of a cylinder.
'[The large number of refills] shows I am a popular leader,' Reddy said in lighter vein. 'I get so many visitors everyday... sometimes 200 to 300. Naturally, consumption will be high.'
While the same argument may be true for most of the public figures, there might also be instances of dealers fraudulently showing bookings in certain names and actually diverting the subsidised bottles to commercial establishments.
Commercial users are supposed to buy the fuel at market rate, which is Rs 396 higher than the price of the subsidised unit. The government is bearing a loss of Rs 390 on every LPG cylinder. Last year alone the government made a loss of around Rs 43,000 crore.
The portal was launched to improve the services given by the oil marketing companies. It also gives an opportunity to consumers to rate the services of their LPG distributors.
