Rival factions of Delhi University teachers have got into a tussle over which side would take up the case of Pavitra Bhardwaj, the recently deceased ex-Ambedkar College employee.
The faction led by former Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) president Aditya Narayan Mishra met chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday to register protest against the death of the ex-DU employee. The left-controlled faction of DUTA said that the lab assistant’s death depicts complete breakdown of redressal mechanisms in Delhi University.
While the Mishra-led faction is targeting Ambedkar College principal, GK Arora, the left group is more interested in taking on the varsity administration to task, including vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh.
During Mishra’s meeting with Dikshit the issue of the systematic and sustained torture, which the late Pavitra Bharadwaj was allegedly subjected to by the college principal, was raised. This according to the former DUTA president was evident from her hand written letters and media reports. The CM assured the faction of all possible action in the matter to ensure justice.
Mishra said, ‘Several letters written by Pavitra, mostly in her own handwriting, provides us with a stark testimony to the sustained sexual and mental harassment she faced at the hands of Arora.
These letters are desperately addressed to various authorities like the college chairman, vice-chancellor, Lt Governor, chief minister and the National Commission for Women. Delhi police has failed to take congisance of the sensitivity involved in the matter and the degree of crime on the part of Arora.'
Nandita Narain, left leader and recently elected president of DUTA said, ‘The tragic death of Pavitra Bharadwaj by self-immolation has exposed the complete breakdown of grievance- redressal mechanisms in Delhi university.
From facts available, Bhardwaj had filed a case of sexual harassment against principal GK Arora and another employee, four years ago.
Reportedly, this decision was taken on flimsy grounds.
