Passengers stranded after SpiceJet cancels flights

The passengers of SpiceJet from various destinations using Delhi as transit had to wait inside the planes due to suspension of the connecting flights. The reason behind the mess is financial crisis of the airline.

“I am here with my family and waiting for the refund of my ticket to book another flight to Aurangabad. I don’t have enough money to book the ticket for my entire family. How do I get there now? They are not refunding the money and have asked us to wait for a few days. The SpiceJet staff is clueless and misleading people,” said Aman Verma at Terminal 1D.

“I have no money left after booking a ticket for Chennai. My ticket got cancelled and I have to pay more now. I have booked a flight ticket for Thursday. I don’t have enough money to put up anywhere in Delhi,” said Rashid, another passenger.

There was complete chaos, anxiety and anger at IGI as all SpiceJet flights were either delayed or cancelled for several hours.

At the airline’s ticket counters people made a beeline to find out if their flight would take off or if they would get refunds. But there were no clear answers. “SpiceJet staff misbehaved with us,” Rashid complained.

The ground staff candidly shared that the airline did not have any fuel to fly aircraft. They, however, officially said later: “There was some temporary operational issue. Flights have now resumed.”

Later in the day, the cash-strapped budget carrier and India’s second largest, got some relief when the regulator DGCA allowed it to open bookings till the end of March 2015, dropping a one-month deadline it had imposed last week.

Earlier, the police and CISF were on their toes to maintain peace at the airport and calm down the passengers.
