To add to their woes, the parents have been asked to withdraw their children, who are above six years of age by December 31, 2014.
The affected parents have written letters to the president of DUWA requesting an urgent meeting to resolve the issue, but no reply has been received so far.
“We are shocked by this unilateral, arbitrary and sudden revision of the age criterion for children at Vaatsalya and that too without any discussion or consultation with the parents. It adversely affects so many parents and their children,” said a parent, whose child has been going to Vaatsalya centre for the past four years.
In a letter written to DUWA president Neelanjana Singh, it said “the decision to lower the age is extremely unfair to children as it assumes that children above six years can manage on their own. What is important to note is that most children affected by this decision are girls of six years and above, who need a safe and secured space for themselves after school hours especially in an unsafe city like Delhi.” A notice that was put at the centre in October stated that the decision was taken “due to an enormous demand and limited infrastructure”.
“Most of the children above six years reach Vaatsalya from their respective schools and spend around three hours there before they leave by 5.30 pm. The charges for such children are at par with those who spend the entire day at Vaatsalya. Hence, we fail to understand how such children can become a ‘strain’ for Vaatsalya as they are not only a source of revenue but also demand minimum attention from the staff,” said an agitated parent.
As mentioned on its website, Vaatsalya is a child care programmes to help working mothers to carry out their dual role — at home and at work with an aim to reduce their stress relating to the welfare and well being of their child.
