The chief electoral officer of Delhi has said that due to similar dates for polling on general elections in the NCR region, the law and order situation will be taken care of and duplication of votes shall be avoided. In the ensuing 16th Lok Sabha elections, the entire national capital region, which consists of 18 Lok Sabha seats, will vote on 10 April.
‘It helps in maintenance of law and order, controlling flow of liquor, muscle men (pehelwans) and money across states, as these forces get busy in their own states,’ said Vijay Dev, chief electoral officer (CEO) of Delhi.
‘It also helps to contain duplication of voting as several people living on border areas on the periphery of Delhi have their names on the voter list in both Delhi and their own state,’ added Dev.
Â
There are a total of 18 seats in NCR, of which seven are in Delhi, six in Haryana region and five in Uttar Pradesh region of NCR. Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh region falling in NCR are, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Bulandshahar, Meerut and Bagpat. Lok Sabha seats in Haryana region of NCR are Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak, Sonipat, Karnal and Bhiwani- Mahendragarh.
‘A lot of voters of Delhi and NCR commute to and fro in the region from one town to another for a job. They avoid voting if different dates of voting are announced as they all need leave. The same date of election in the entire Delhi NCR region will also increase turn out of voters as we need to declare only one day leave for the entire region,’ contended Dev.
The chief electoral officer of Delhi, who had managed a record 66 per cent voter turnout, by allowing extra hours is expecting a higher turnout in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
