For the first time, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be offered as a subject in all schools across India, with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) finalising the syllabus for ICT.
A senior NCERT official on condition of anonymity said, 'The Central Institute of Educational Technology wing of NCERT has prepared the syllabus for ICT. Till now there was no curriculum for the ICT. But now, NCERT, which is the apex body for all academic matters at the state and central level, has drawn up a curriculum for schools across the Nation .'
According to NCERT officials, 'ICT will be taught to students of classes VI to XII. In order to complete the course study of ICT, students have to study the three levels designed by NCERT, Basic, Intermediate and Advance. Before completing class X, students have to complete the Advance level.' 'The course is designed in such a way that it will expand the creativity and problem solving capacity among students.'
The official added, 'NCERT believes that by looking at the development in the technology it has become mandatory to use the skills of students at every level. In this regard, every Board has the right to modify it and set the examination for the evaluation of ICT, under which a separate course completion certificate will given to students. But it will take time in implementing the course in all the schools.'
In 2012 government of India had prepared the policy of NCERT curriculum provisions. Now, the course has been prepared as model.
R K Sharma, principal of Ahlcon Public School, said ‘There is no harm in giving supplements to the students. It is good that the curriculum has been designed by the NCERT. But I won't say much regarding the course because it has not yet been implemented, and the study of ICT requires technical skills.'
