Pune: The Indian Army marked its 77th Army Day with grandeur and solemnity at the Bombay Engineers Group and Centre Parade Ground in Pune, Maharashtra on Wednesday. For the Southern Command, this was the second occasion of hosting the parade, following the first in Bangalore in 2023.

The Chief of Army Staff General Dwivedi paid tribute to the brave soldiers and reaffirmed the Army’s readiness to face challenges on the Northern and Western borders. In his address, he highlighted the advancements in infrastructure and operational readiness, emphasising the pivotal role of the Indian Army in safeguarding national security, contributing to disaster relief, and maintaining peace across the country. Stressing the Army’s commitment to modernisation, he spoke of the Decade of Transformation initiative aimed at enhancing technology adoption, operational efficiency, and empowering women in the forces.

Adding to the significance of the event was the participation of two unique contingents- the Women ‘Agniveer’ Contingent from the Corps of Military Police, symbolising the expanding role of women in the armed forces, and a Girls NCC Contingent from the Maharashtra Directorate, reflecting the increasing inclusivity of the Indian Army. A fly-past by Sukhoi aircraft and army helicopters added to the day’s magnificence, with the mounted contingent of the Army Service Corps Horse Unit presenting a regal spectacle.

The event was started with a spectacular parade led by Major General Anurag Vij, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area. The parade featured eight marching contingents, showcasing the pride and discipline of regimental centres, including the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Madras Regiment, Mechanised Infantry Regiment, and the Bombay Engineer Group.

General, as the Reviewing Officer, presented 52 prestigious awards, including 15 Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 37 Chief of Army Staff Unit Appreciations. Eight gallantry medals were awarded posthumously, honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who laid down their lives in service to the nation.

The event was also graced by a distinguished gathering of military and civil dignitaries, including General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of Army Staff, and Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command. The COAS began the ceremony by paying homage to fallen soldiers at the Command War Memorial, honouring their supreme sacrifice for the nation.

The parade also honoured distinguished veterans for their post-retirement contributions to society, with the COAS presenting the Veterans Achievers Award to individuals excelling in education, entrepreneurship, and social work.

A key attraction was the display of advanced military technology, highlighting the Army’s preparedness for modern warfare. Showcased equipment included the K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer, T-90 tanks, BMP-2 Sarath infantry combat vehicles, and the indigenous Sarvatra Bridging System. Notable innovations such as the Robotic Mule, Swathi Weapon Locating Radar, and ATOR N1200 amphibious all-terrain vehicle underscored the Army’s focus on indigenisation and future readiness.

Tableaus during the parade highlighted the Army’s diverse initiatives, from its Mission Olympics program to its commitment to climate resilience and sustainable operations. A tableau on technological infusion drew significant attention, demonstrating advancements such as AI-powered tactical systems, drone swarms for precision operations, and robust cybersecurity measures. The display underscored the Army’s dedication to leveraging indigenous technology to revolutionise modern warfare.

For the first time, the Nepal Army Band participated in the parade, reflecting the deep cultural and military ties between India and Nepal. Their performance was a testament to the enduring partnership and shared history of the two nations.

The Army Day Parade in Pune not only celebrated the valour and dedication of the Indian Army but also highlighted its modernisation, inclusivity, and commitment to the nation. With a renewed focus on innovation and indigenisation, the Indian Army continues to embody the spirit of service and excellence, standing as a pillar of strength for a secure and prosperous India.
