In the fear of being killed in encounter by various state police, Delhi’s most wanted and elusive gangster — Neeraj Bawana (27) surrendered before the Delhi Police Special Cell, a highly placed source claimed. However, senior police officials announced it as an arrest made after an 18-month chase.
Neeraj Bawana, whose actual name is Neeraj Sehrawat, was wanted for more than 40 cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion. In mid-March Neeraj’s mother, Sudesh Devi and his elder brother — Pankaj were nabbed from the domestic airport in Delhi while going to Kolkata.
“Two live cartridges were found in Devi’s bag, along with cash worth Rs 5 lakhs. She was accompanied by her son, who was later identified as a wanted criminal as well, booked under MCOCA. He was handed over to Delhi Police Special Cell, while Devi was granted bail
by a local court,” the source added.
“Being nabbed at the domestic airport was part of the plan executed by the top honchos of the gang including Neeraj and Pankaj. They were well aware that their mother would easily get bail and the cops will arrest Pankaj, who will further help Neeraj in surrendering before the police,” he said.
Pankaj was a key member because he used to handle the administrative work of the Neeraj Bawana gang.
According to sources, “Amit Mallik, alias Bhura who had escaped from police custody, while being produced before a local court in Bhagpat, also surrendered in Patiala, Punjab on Saturday. However, Patiala Police also claimed it as an arrest.”
It is important to mention that for an easy escape from police custody, Neeraj Bawana had helped him and hatched a conspiracy with the help of local gangs.
SN Shrivastava, Special Commission of Police (Special Cell) on Tuesday said, “Neeraj Bawana was arrested from Qammaruddin Nagar in the wee hours of Tuesday, following a tip-off that he would be coming to meet a friend. Accordingly, a trap was laid and he was nabbed along with his associate Rashid Khan.”
“Initially the accused persons tried to escape by opening fire towards the advancing policemen, at which the cops too, cross fired,” Shrivastava added.
Bawana had been arrested several times earlier, including once in 2012. He had jumped parole in 2013.
