Jubilant with their landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP leaders in civic bodies are planning to display framed pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in all the major offices of the corporation. But the opposition is not ready to buy the argument of the ruling BJP that the post of Prime Minister should be treated above politics as he represents the country.
‘I have directed the concerned officers in the corporation to purchase and display the framed pictures of Narendra Modi after he takes oath as Prime Minister. The post of prime minister is above politics as he represents the country,’ said Satish Upadhayay, chairman of standing committee in South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Upadhayay has small framed pictures of his ideal leaders — Deen Dayal Upadhayay and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his office at civic center. The political office bearers in the corporation like- mayor, deputy mayor, chairpersons and their deputies in various committees, leader of opposition display the pictures of their ideal leaders and party leaders but pictures of political leaders are not displayed in the offices of the corporation.Â
‘The prime minister is executive head of the country and there is no harm in displaying his pictures in all the offices of the corporation as inspirational figure,’ argues Upadhayay.Â
Besides, office of the political appointees, commissioner and heads of various departments, the three MCDs have 12 zonal offices in the city, several hospitals, dispensaries and over 1700 schools. It’s pertinent to mention that photo of outgoing prime minister Man Mohan Singh was never displayed in the MCD offices.
