‘Married, so what!’

Kafirana in Urdu means ‘non-believer’. But the newlook Chitrangada Singh can hardly be called one. For one, this Delhi girl believes in herself completely. Which is why when she was called up to do Kaafirana, an item number in Shirish Kunder’s upcoming Joker, she didn’t think twice before saying yes.

‘It was a shock for me. But I agreed because as an actor I want to play different roles,’ she told Millennium Post.

The actor said that with Kaafirana she wanted to come out of her comfort zone. ‘I never thought I could dance. You get comfortable doing the same kind of work. So I was really nervous before the song. But it is good to take a risk,’ she said.

‘In an item song, you get to play a different character. In Kaafirana, I got to play a rustic girl. So far I have done only urban and modern roles,’ she explained. The actor said she was approached by choreographer-director Farah Khan for the item number. ‘I met her at a parlour and later I got a call from the production house. I hope I meet more such people in that parlour,’ she said, laughing.

Does she think marriage acts as an impediment to an actress’ career as Kareena Kapoor recently discovered after being unceremoniously dropped from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela and brought back on board only after she put marriage plans on hold? ‘I haven’t felt any prejudice towards married actresses. The producers only question whether one would be able to devote time to the project since they invest so much money,’ claimed the actress who has been married to ace golfer Jyoti Randhawa.

Chitrangada had recently said that the lyrics I want fakht you was changed to I want just you only to avoid controversy. ‘It is an unnecessary way of attracting attention,’ she said. Does she think that the Censor Board needs to change with the times? ‘They are only doing their job. There is a huge difference in sensibilities in audiences from Bandra and Bihar,’ the actor explained.

The actor, who likes to do scuba diving and sketching in her spare time, admitted that she has become a lot more focussed now. ‘Initially I wasn’t very ambitious,’ she said.

Does she take advice from her ‘good friend’ Akshay Kumar? ‘He is a genuine person and you can call him any time for advice,’ she gushed. The actor feels that Bollywood is undergoing a change. ‘But it’s still the male star that drives films. But kudos to Vidya [Balan] and Kareena for bringing about a change,’ she said. ‘I hope the character and story becomes more important than glamorisation of women. With films like Gangs of Wasseypur, there is a start,’ she added. Chitrangada will next be seen opposite Arjun Rampal in Inkaar.
