The Lieutenant Governor (L-G) has turned the tables on civic administration in the city. Junior officers have now been made heads of surprise inspection teams for various civic departments in the city by the L-G. Now, instead of looking up to their seniors, these officers have now become their watchdogs.
At present there are 12 IAS officers on probation in the city. They will complete their probation period by June. Besides 15 officers from the Delhi, Andaman Nicobar Island Civil Services (DANICS) category are also serving their probationary period. Presently, LG has formed 50 surprise inspection teams, of which 27 are headed by these probationary officers.
‘It is a good learning experience for us and we are enjoying these new responsibilities. However, we were earlier deployed on independent posts like sector district magistrate (SDM) but this is a unique experience,’ said a young IAS officer on probation in Delhi.
Raids conducted by these officers have begun to fetch results, as they have taken action against departments that were barely touched earlier. Three raids conducted so far by these officers has led to the suspension of two food inspectors, sealed 20 fair price shops, prosecuted 17 petrol pumps and sealed several premises, which had earlier existed on paper. These inspection teams also raided half a dozen private schools and half a dozen hospitals to inspect whether the EWS quota norms were being followed.
‘These raids will be carried out regularly and action will also be taken after the concerned persons, hospitals and schools submit their reply to our show cause notice,’ said a secretary-level officer in Delhi government.
