As the BJP found itself on the back foot with the CBI in its first chargesheet stating that Ishrat Jahan was killed in a fake encounter, the party on Wednesday alleged that the investigative agency has underplayed the role of Lashkar-e-Toiba in the encounter case. ‘After this investigation, if the CBI can’t say who these people are, it clearly gives the picture that the chargesheet underplays the role of the LeT and indicts the Indian security establishment, demoralising them in the process,’ said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.
The BJP leader said as the UPA government was in power at the Centre at the time of the incident, it would have had knowledge about the encounter as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) would have informed it. IB officer Rajender Kumar was heading the state investigation bureau at that time.
‘This encounter happened in 2004 when UPA was at the Centre. Therefore, the IB was reporting to them. Such is the nature of functioning of the IB that at least once a week, the inputs shared with states are shared with the PM himself,’ said Sitharaman.
The BJP leader said it’s surprising the CBI has not revealed anything about the background of the people who were killed in the encounter. Sitharaman alleged the government might be giving regular instructions to the CBI on the case and therefore the agency is confused which way to go.
