Left, Cong share honours in DUTA polls

The final result of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) election, shows the CPI(M) affiliate Democratic Teachers Front and Congress affiliates Indian Natonal Teachers Congress and Academics for Action and Development (AAD) sharing top honours.

While the CPI(M) group, which vehemently opposed the reforms introduced by the current vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh, won the seat of president’s and four seats of the 15-member executive, the Congress combine managed to get eight seats of the executive.

Though its candidate Ashwani Shankar lost the post of president to DTF’s Nandita Narain, observers point out that Congress rebel Shib C Panda had managed to garner more than 550 votes.
While the DTF candidates managed to win the president’s and executive polls, all the candidates fielded by its allies like the CTF, LDTF, FDS and Janwadi, who more aggressively opposed the introduction of the Four Year Under-graduate Programme (FYUP), were badly mauled in the election.
However, the worst performance came from the BJP-backed National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF).

While its candidate for the president’s poll came third, just one of two candidates fielded by it for the executive could romp home.
‘It’s sad that a group, which represents the principal Opposition party and which once held sway over the campus is now reduced to smithereens,’ said a DU teacher.
The DTF and rebel Congress, which had levelled charges of interference by the Delhi University administration, has thanked the teachers for turning up in large numbers to vote in the polls.
