16-year-old drowns in pond while fighting in Dum Dum

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a 16-year-old boy drowned in a pond. The incident took place at Sukurali More in Dum Dum on Sunday morning.

The victim, Suman Sil (16), was found floating on a pond, while his boot and jersey were found near the pond. The victim used to play football. Locals rushed him to College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

After being informed, police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard.

According to the preliminary investigation, police said that the victim along with four others went to the pond on Sunday morning after playing Football. Sil was engaged in a heated altercation with one of his friends over some issues.

Soon, a scuffle broke out between the two. According to a witness, police came to know that the victim fell in the pond, along with the boy with whom he was fighting by the side of the pond. Sil's friend managed to come out of the pond, while he could not as he did not know how to swim. The victim used to play football at the district level.

The other friends, who were at the spot at the time of the incident, fled the spot immediately after the incident.

The family members of the victim started a search operation in the neighbourhood as he did not return home. The family members accompanied by the locals started a thorough search.

They later came to know that someone had seen the victim standing near the pond along with others. On Sunday afternoon, locals found the body in the pond.

Divers were engaged to recover the body.

Police have started a detailed probe into the incident. They are trying to know if it was an accident or there was any foul play behind it.
