Industry’s changed for better: Sridevi

The ramp and the front row seemed to be the preferred destinations for B-town divas recently. What else would explain Raveena Tandon Thadani coming down to attend Manav Gangwani’s show and designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee showing off ‘good friend’ Sridevi and Gauri Shinde [director of English Vinglish and wife of Paa director R Balki] before the show on the last day of PCJ Delhi Couture Week on Sunday?

Despite a long hiatus from movies and a teenage daughter, the Sadma star’s popularity hasn’t faded one bit. Fans were seen jostling with security guards for photos and autographs, though Sri refused to sign autographs.

How does it feel to be back amidst the craze? ‘It feels great,’ a deadpan Sridevi told Millennium Post. Daughter Jahnavi and husband Boney Kapoor were clearly feeling lost in the melee for the star and Jahnavi was even heard asking papa Kapoor where they should be going now that mama’s lost in a maze of security guards.

‘We will wait here,’ Boney told Jahnavi, patiently waiting for the wife to return after clicking pictures. In fact, such is the chemistry between the couple even after all these years of marriage that during one of the mad scrambles involving fans, media and security guards, Sridevi was seen frantically looking around for Boney and seemed visibly relieved when she finally found his hand.

With the movie-making business transformed and movies based on real life the order of the day, what does she think of the industry now? ‘I think everything has its own charm. Then, movies were different. Now they are doing other kinds of movies,’ said Sridevi. ‘But I think the industry has changed for the better,’ she added.

Having worked in the days when there was a lot of discrimination against married actresses in the industry, does she think that the tradition continues, especially after the Kareena Kapoor-Sanjay Leela Bhansali fiasco? ‘I don’t think there is any such discrimination in the industry. I haven’t faced any,’ she said, curtly.

What next after English Vinglish? ‘I haven’t decided yet. Right now, I am only thinking about English Vinglish,’ said the actor.

And what does she think about the collection? Sridevi says she is quite a fan of Sabyasachi’s creations. ‘I love what he designed for me [a heavily threadworked cream and black sari]. The way he uses intricate hand-work on his collection is fantastic.’
