‘We feel very sad when we see people sleeping on footpaths and roadside. I have given directions to the concerned department to swing into action,’ said Manish Sisodia, after holding a meeting with senior officers of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
‘These shelter homes will be built in nearby localities where homeless people are residing temporarily,’ he added. The minister also directed officers, public representatives and self help groups to sensitise homeless people to live in shelter homes, particularly during nights. ‘Officers of DUSIB and NGOs managing these night shelters have been directed to provide the best possible facilities to the inhabitants,’ he further added.
The officer on special duty (OSD) for night shelters in DUSIB, PD Ashok said that work on these night shelters will start on Saturday. ‘We, with the help of NGOs and MLAs, have identified over 50 places to erect temporary porta cabin night shelters. These night shelters will not have any burden on public exchequer as several NGOs are ready to bear the cost. They just want our administrative and legal support,’ said PD Ashok.
Meanwhile, in a surprise inspection of these night shelters by new ministers, it was revealed that they were in very pitiable conditions.
The National Human Rights Commission on Friday issued a notice to the government, for failing to provide adequate shelter to homeless.
