The 175-year old bakery, which was previously known as Wilson’s bakery, has been on top of our confectionery list since its inception in the 1830s.
It was renovated and opened in 2013 after the Lalit group bought the Great Eastern from the State Government. Started by David Wilson, the bakery was one of a kind and continues to remain so. Although it has been refurbished, its old glory hasn’t faded away. While the ‘Legendary Oven’ is kept on display as an ode to the British colonial era, the kitchen has been modified in a way so that it is visible to the customers.
To blend the essence of the old heritage with modern state of the art infrastructure, the brown brick wall containing historical posters is the best backdrop they could have opted for. The decor also consists of an old iron spiral staircase that connects the entire hotel to the bakery, making it easier for the guests staying there.
However, it has also got another entrance for people who just want to visit the bakery and is connected to Wilson’s - the pub, which is dedicated to the memory of Wilson on one side. If now, one is wondering about the taste and quality of the items on the menu, then let me assure you that it is one step ahead of the decor. Although the number of items have increased on the menu, their standard remains intact. The bakery serves traditional plum cakes, fruit cakes, delicious cookies, chocolates and old favourites like the Dim-puff (egg patty), brown bread, white bread, exotic muffins among other savouries. Also, one cannot afford to miss the ‘Belgian Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Pastry’ that has been its signature since ages.
With all the quality talk being done, the bakery has also met our expectations when it comes to pricing. Most of the baked products are priced below Rs 60, making it is as reasonable as any other confectionery in the city. The bakery specialises in producing high-quality stuff at pocket-friendly prices. So, this place should be the first one to cross your mind when you get a craving for pastries, croissants or muffins on a budget. Also, keeping with the spirit of festivities, the first batch of cookies from the legendary oven every year is distributed amongst the underprivileged school children during Christmas and the proceeds from the Christmas sale is donated to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
“The uniqueness lies in its existence as it represents the traditional and historical importance of the city but more importantly, the quality of its confectionery and the long association with the common man of Kolkata has been retained,” says Sudip Sinha, the Food and Beverage Manager of the hotel.
“We are also trying to develop our infrastructure in bringing the products of this age old bakery to one’s doorstep. The plans would be soon announced and set a new connect with the people of Kolkata, who cannot visit the Bakery because of time crunch but want to avail of quality products at the comfort of their office or home,” he adds, while talking about future plans.
The Lalit Great Eastern is a heritage landmark located in the very heart of the city. Hence, people can avail of its accessibility, irrespective of where they live. This place is definitely a must visit for all, especially the ones blessed with a sweet tooth.
