The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani's son, Abdul Qadir, to contest the by-poll from his parliamentary constituency in Multan following his disqualification by the Supreme Court.
Four days after the apex court disqualified Gilani due to his conviction of contempt, the PPP on Saturday said his son would contest the bye-poll from Multan constituency in Punjab scheduled for 19 July. Abdul Qadir is currently a member of the Punjab Assembly.
Gilani's daughter Fiza Batool too posted a message about the decision to field her brother on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
‘PPP nominates Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani to contest from [the parliamentary seat in] Multan,’ she wrote. In another post, she said the ‘court of the people will give their verdict on 19 July’.
Ali Musa, another son of the former premier, was recently elected to the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament.
However, both Ali Musa and Abdul Qadir have been linked to corruption scandals. While Ali Musa has been accused of involvement in alleged irregularities in the import of a large quantity of the controlled drug Ephedrine, Abdul Qadir has been linked to a scam in the arrangement of Haj pilgrimage. Both brothers have denied the allegations.
ZARDARI PROTECTS YOUSUF'S DECISIONS
President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday issued an ordinance to give constitutional protection to all decisions made by former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani during the period when he was disqualified by the Supreme Court, averting a possible crisis.
A notification issued by the Law Ministry said the ordinance provided constitutional protection to all decisions made by Gilani between 26 April and 19 June.
The ordinance also covers all domestic and foreign agreements signed by Gilani and advise given by him to the President during this period.
According to the ordinance, the decisions made by Gilani cannot be challenged in any court or forum, including the Supreme Court.
The notification said the President had issued an ordinance because both houses of Parliament were not in session.
On 19 June, the Supreme Court disqualified Gilani due to his conviction of contempt for refusing to reopen graft cases in Switzerland against Zardari.
A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry further ruled that the post of premier had been vacant since 26 April, when another bench had convicted Gilani of contempt.
