The woman, originally from Nepal, is a resident of Jatvapur village located at the Delhi border. She has lodged a case against the autorickshaw driver at the DLF Phase-2 police station.
The Nepali woman was working as a bar attendant at a pub in Sahara Mall on MG road.
According to the police, the accused, Bablu alias Tuntun, a resident Nathupur village of Gurgaon – has been arrested. Bablu hails from Madhubani district in Bihar and has been working as an autorickshaw driver for over two years, the police said. The woman had hired Bablu’s autorickshaw to go home after work in the wee hours on Tuesday.
The incident took place when Bablu allegedly parked his vehicle in an isolated area near a Rapid Metro station. Denying the charge, the accused claimed that he was being implicated in a false case as he refused to give money to the woman for alcohol and cigarettes.
“We have arrested the accused after medical examination of victim was conducted. Her statement has been recorded before the magistrate,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Hawa Singh told Millennium Post.
The Millennium City has recorded more than a dozen incidents of rape and molestation on the infamous stretch of Mahrauli-MG road. The gang-rape of two women in a moving car near Sahara Mall earlier this year had raised questions on security in the upmarket MG Road area.
Keeping the safety of women in mind, the Gurgaon police had started an initiative called Operation Romeo in various parts of the city. The data received from the women police station revealed that around 300-320 people, both men and women, have been booked under Operation Romeo.
According to the police, the operation helped keeping a check on such activities, but it was discontinued for over a month.
“During the festive season, we needed heavy deployment in other activities and VVIP campaigns, because of which the drive was put on hold. We will be soon continuing with the drive so that rape cases on the most infamous stretches of Gurgaon could be averted,” said Dharma Yadav, Additional commissioner of Police, sector 5, Gurgaon.
