Ganga in Rishikesh back regains pristine glory

The holy city Rishikesh is dotted with innumerable ashrams and religious akhadas, but it is the sacred  river Ganga that catches the attention of pilgrims and tourists. Very often, people talk about maili Ganga. But with the onset of the winter, the river is back to its original colour-i.e. light green.

Although, the number of tourists has dipped, still there is liveliness during evening Ganga aarti at various banks in Rishikesh. And with barely two months left for the Ardh Kumb in Haridwar, the state government is trying its best to enthrall pilgrims and tourists. The government expects that over three crore pilgrims from across the country and abroad will visit the city.

The river water from outside looks calm, but strong flow can sweep you off your feet. Many enter river for a holy dip at dangerous spots. Drowning is common in the river, but the district administration is yet to put in place some safety measures. Swargaashram, Muni ki Reti, Lakshman Jhulam Ram Jhula, Nav Ghat and Sai Ghat are some dangerous spots, which need constantly monitoring.

Prior to Ardh Kumbh, the administration should put up big sign boards, on which warnings are written in  English, Hindi and other regional languages, so that people are aware of the danger. Residents say the administration should also develop some bathing ghats with proper safety chains to ensure safety and security of pilgrims and tourists alike.
