FYUP rollback puts careers of ad hoc teachers in jeopardy

Ad hoc teachers of University of Delhi have become victims of the rollback of Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). As foundation courses which were introduced in FYUP have been scrapped, colleges are sacking teachers. ‘Ad hoc teachers are losing jobs after rollback of FYUP. Colleges are reasoning that the since there is no workload these teachers are not required. It might be that ad hoc teachers are being fired arbitrarily.

The process is undemocratic. Colleges are just using whims and fancies in appointing and sacking teachers accordingly. This can’t continue,’ said Savita Khan, an ad hoc who lost her job recently.
Since, foundation courses have been scrapped, teachers for life sciences, history and other courses are finding their jobs in jeopardy.

‘After rollback of FYUP and restructuring of courses, the programme teachers are losing their jobs. There is lot of confusion. Workload hasn’t been distributed yet. We don’t know whether we can continue with our jobs or not. We did appeal to Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) to intervene but they said they can’t do much. There are also chances that many ad hoc teachers may lose their summer salaries,’ Indu Varshneya, ad hoc professor, Shyam Lal College.

While teachers may be worried and fuming about over their job loss, principal of Ramanujan College, SP Aggarwal, said: ‘What can we do? There are no jobs for teachers who were hired for foundation and programme courses. We haven’t received directions from anywhere. We can’t hire unnecessarily. Teachers are creating unwanted pressure.’ ‘We did go and talk to principals of Ramanujan , Gargi and Ramjas College. We asked them not to remove ad hoc teachers. But we can’t do much. Workload has decreased,’ said Nandita Narian, president, DUTA.
