Faulty water bills leave Rohini residents fuming

‘I did not receive any water bill since August 2013 but now a bill has been generated on my name for the period August 2013 to August 2014 without any mention of the actual reading of the water meter,’ said Kumar Abhiranjan, a resident of Nimari Colony.

‘Earlier, DJB used to send us water bills every two months but since the water meters were replaced under a new scheme we never received water bills,’ he added.

Abhiranjan came to know about the water bill when he approached the regional office of DJB regarding messages on his mobile phone saying his water connection would be terminated if a bill amount of Rs 5,583 is not paid.

He is not alone. Several residents whose previous water meters were replaced by Larsen & Tubro’s hi-tech water meters are facing the same problem. ‘The executives never visited my house to take readings from water meters but sent us water bills of 13 months in one go on average basis,’ said a resident.

BR Arora, a resident in sector 15, received an SMS on his mobile phone to deposit Rs 40,160 as water bill from April to August. ‘When I visited the office of the zonal revenue officer, the officers posted there asked me to download the bill from the website.

I was shocked to know the bill amount with no mention of water meter reading to show actual consumption,’ said Arora. It took around two months to get the bill corrected and Arora finally deposited Rs 4,160. ‘A meter reader had come in February but the reading was not mentioned,’ he added.

Not everybody is as lucky as Arora and thousands are running from pillar to post to get water bills corrected. These bills have been generated without any mention of meter reading. ‘Those who pursue their cases get corrected water bills but most of the consumers end up paying the faulty amount,’ said Vijay Yadav, a resident in sector 18 Rohini.

‘I had written a letter to the chief executive officer (CEO) of DJB on 16 September on this issue. The problem persists and residents are running from pillar to post get their faulty bills corrected,’ said Vijay Prakash Pandey, local councillor.

Pandey had received a water bill of Rs 5200 but had to finally deposit Rs 2600. He claimed that over 13,000 consumers from his constituency have received faulty water bills.

The problem persists in the entire Rohini area (Zone North West -2) of DJB. Here, water meters were installed by Larsen & Tubro in 2013. The company had claimed the meters were automatic and hi-tech.
