Ending the cycle of neglect: JNU installs sanitary napkin dispensers

For the first time, sanitary pads dispensers have been installed at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the academic block in order to help women students who often have to travel quite a distance to purchase it.

“It was a long standing demand. In the first phase, three dispensers have been placed in the area surrounding the Shipra-Koyna hostels, area around School of Social Sciences and the area near the University Health Centre,” said Ashutosh, president of JNU Students’ Union. The dispensers would be running 24*7 and only Rs 5-10 would be the cost for availing a sanitary napkin. “We plan to expand this. These dispenser machines are multi-purpose, so we will ask the administration to add the facility of condom vending also in the same,” said Ashutosh.

Though sanitary napkins are available at shops in the campus, students complain that it is difficult for them to travel that far in between their classes. “In between our classes, how can we travel four or five kilometers to get a sanitary napkin. It is very difficult. Also, shops are closed during night time. Dispensers machines are an absolute necessary,” said Srishti Yadav, a JNU student.
