BJP councillors in East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Thursday expressed their anguish before the senior leaders of the party for being neglected in the ticket distribution process.
The party in its first list of 58 candidates has given tickets to three sitting councillors each from North Delhi Municipal Corporation and South Delhi Municipal Corporation but none to any EDMC councillor. On the other hand, the Congress has almost decided to field its East DMC councillor Varyam Kaur against BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan.
‘We have run the corporation effectively despite being the most economically weaker among the three municipal corporations in the city but party’s attitude towards East DMC councillors in ticket distribution is shocking,’ said a senior councillor in East DMC.
There were around half a dozen serious ticket hopefuls in this assembly election but all missed the train except former chairman of standing committee Mahek Singh who still has some hopes as the decision of the candidate from Mustafabad seat, from where he is seeking a ticket, has been put on hold. Singh is facing tough competition from Jagdish Pradhan who quit the Congress to join BJP after being promised a party ticket.
Among rest of the seven seats, which have been put on hold, the party may field two more sitting councillors — Rajni Abbhi from Timarpur seat and Kartar Singh Tanwar from Chhaturpur assembly segment. Abbi was the last mayor of unified MCD and presently represents Mukherjee Nagar in North DMC while Tanwar is sitting councillor from Bhati ward in South DMC.
In East DMC, leader of opposition BB Tyagi was being considered as a strong candidate from Laxmi Nagar, mayor RN Dubey from Shahdara, former mayor Annapurna Misra from Karawal Nagar, deputy mayor Mahendera Ahuja from Vishwas Nagar, councillor Devender Kumar from Patpargunj. However, most of them were denied tickets against ‘outsider’ candidates whom they say were ‘para-dropped’ by the party.
