DUSU polls become commuters’ nightmare

It’s election time at Delhi University, which means more rush and chaos at campus. With one candidate moving around with  ten to twenty people in their vehicles, encroachment of public road has become a common sight in the campus of University of Delhi (DU).

Cars, sporting posters of the candidates of students’ associations like National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil  Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are found taking up all the public space on the roads.

Police are stating that they are taking all necessary measures to stop vehicles being parked on campus roads. ‘The encroachment of public space is a common sight at DU. But during elections, it increases even more. We have enhanced patrolling on the road and are towing as many vehicles as possible, parked illegally,’ said a police official.

Though the student associations claim to work for their interest, the show of strength during polls depict another picture. ‘Nothing has changed over years. Its still money and muscle power in DUSU elections.

One candidate moves with group of  50-60 people. Why does one need that ? Instead of raising issues, only thing that is raised is candidate‘s name,’ said Sunny, state secretary of All India Stidents Association (AISA).
