Poll campaigning in the girls hostel of Delhi University (DU) for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election, will be restricted to the hostel visiting hours and any violation should be reported to the police at the 100 helpline number. This was decided in a meeting attended by the vice-chancellor (V-C), Delhi University, Dinesh Singh and joint commissioner of police and other officials on 26 August.
Once an FIR is registered against anyone breaking this rule, the name of the errant students will be maintained in the police files, making
it difficult for them to get police clearance for government and private jobs later on. It will also make it difficult for them to get a visa to travel to any other
country.
Ashok Vohra, chief election officer of DUSU elections said, 'After a long discussion, the university has decided that the canvassing time will be restricted to the visiting hours in the girls hostel. If anyone is found indulging in any illegal activities, strict action will be taken.' It was also decided in the meeting that 'if any case or FIR is registered against the students, the violation of rules will be maintained in their records.’
Vohra also added that handmade posters should be pasted at designated places only. Photographs of posters pasted at unauthorised places may be sent to the police and a case will be registered against those responsible under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007.'
The varsity has also put a cap of Rs 5,000 on the permitted expenditure per candidate. The elections are scheduled to be held on 13 September.
