A team of Delhi University teachers has conducted an online survey which has showed that around 50 percent of the faculty is working on an irregular basis. Among them 41 per cent have been delaying their marriages and 26 have been delaying starting families in view of uncertain employment.
Albeena Shakil, department of English, Bharati College and member of the survey team said the online survey was conducted between 6 and 16 August, 2013, to see work conditions of ad hoc/guest and temporary faculty of Delhi University. ‘It is estimated that irregular faculty comprise nearly 50 per cent of the teaching strength of Delhi University,’ she said.
‘Of these, 41% teachers have been delaying their marriage and another 26% are delaying the birth of children in view of their uncertain employment. 64% of respondents live in constant fear of losing their job, 44% have faced misbehavior or humiliating experience at work, 28% have faced misbehavior from colleagues and over 20% from the administration,’ she added. The survey also said that ‘around 9 teachers out of 223 respondents faced sexual harassment, and 19% of the total respondents reported some form of social discrimination at work. Among the SC/ST/OBC/Minority respondents the proportion facing social discrimination is over 30%.’
A senior university official, on the condition of anonymity, said that ‘all is presumptive analysis and this methodology or research seems to be unauthentic. Moreover, 223 is very small size, even less than four percent of the total strength of faculty strength.’ The total faculty strength of Delhi University is around 7000.
