DU, police join hands to ensure campus security

In a first of its kind move aimed at tackling instances of eve teasing and ragging, the Delhi University has entered into an agreement with Delhi police.
The police will ensure 24X7 patrolling and monitoring of the main campus through installing new vans and gypsies on DU’s north campus. Â
A senior university official speaking on condition of anonymity said, ‘In order to ensure a crime-free campus and to ensure the best quality security, Delhi University has tied up with Delhi police and decided to introduce new gypsies that will keep a watch on the campus. We have decided to place five to seven gypsies on the roads to in the coming months.’
‘The vehicles will have Delhi police officers, while the university security officers will keep a watch in the area. The exact number of vehicles is yet to be decided. A proposal has been sent to Delhi police in this regard,’ the official said.
Deputy commissioner of police (north district) Sindhu Pillai informed that it was decided in a recently held meeting that the police officers will also work in coordination with the traffic police in the area to make the area congestion free.
‘They have ensured that these vehicle will help the Delhi police in controlling crime as well as traffic problems, these mobile vehicles would help the other police patrolling vehicles to curb crimes, our men will equip the university’s security staff with wireless sets through which they will be able to get in touch with a control room on the university campus,’ Sindhu added.
A DU security officer on condition of anonymity said, ‘Delhi police itself have six motorcycles which keep a watch throughout the campus areas. Two police control room (PCR) vans are also deployed near the vice-chancellor’s house and Vishwavidyalya Metro station. As many as 53 close circuit television cameras are installed on the college campus. Eleven more have been asked for.’
Earlier, the campus administration used to run regular special drives to prevent crimes on the campus, the officer informed.
‘With an intention to ensure safety in the area another police picket will be opened soon,’ an officer of Delhi police said.
