‘The student-faculty committee was already there but it was not pro-active. But in recent scenario, the committee is necessary for various purposes and also, for proper understanding of the issues,’ said Sumanyu Sathpathy, head of English department.
Recently in September, around 150 students of MA (English) had complained to Sathpathy against three newly-recruited teachers for ‘non-secular’ and ‘offensive’ comments allegedly made in the class. They wrote, in their letter that teachers were delivering ‘extremely dis-satisfactory lectures’ and thus they want them to be replaced. The professor of university have welcomed the move to form such committee.
‘The provision was always there but hardly it was implemented. Every department should form this committee. This is a good initiative and its members should be elected democratically,’ said Saikat Ghosh, an English professor at DU.
Regarding the issue that plagued the department recently, Saikat said the teachers expressed solidarity with students.
‘Many of the teachers had signed the letter given to head of department demanding a wider
discussion and dialogue regarding their complaint against the controversial lectures,’ he said.
