Delhi’s Timarpur-Okhla plant makes waste to energy commercially viable

The Timarpur-Okhla ‘waste to energy’ project is now in operation, generating nearly 16 MW energy at the rate of Rs 2.84 per unit. While the Delhi Distribution company (DISCOM) is purchasing power at the rate of Rs 5.23 per unit on an average. In other words, the project is a source of cost effective energy.

Interestingly, when the Delhi government started to set up this plant, then the residents, rag pickers, environmentalists and civil society groups had protested against it.

Delhi Transco Limited’s spokesperson Rishi Raj said, ‘The Timarpur-Okhla project is utilising 2,050 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day to generate over 16 MW of green electricity.’

According to him,  another project in Ghazipur is also under way. ‘The Ghazipur project would process 1,300 tonnes of municipal waste per day and generate 12 MW of green electricity. It is expected to start soon,’ said Raj.

Ghazipur project was awarded to Delhi International Airport Limited through open competitive bidding process at a levelised tariff of Rs 3.67 per unit.

Delhi Municipal Corporations director (press and information) Y S Mann said, ‘The city is getting energy at the cheapest cost. In the process our daily waste is being used in energy generation, thus solving the land-fill problems. In future, Delhi does not have any land left for dumping these waste.

It is also noteworthy that a pilot plant of 500 kg per day capacity, based on the pattern of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Technology, has been set up at Delhi secretariat for the conversion of kitchen waste to biogas as a suitable replacement of LPG.
