Police reports notable decline in crimes against women

NEW DELHI: Delhi has seen a sea of reduction in crimes against women thanks to the Delhi Police’s structured and focused approach to ensuring safety and security. The latest data reflects a marked decline across several categories of such crimes, demonstrating the effectiveness of innovative strategies and community-driven initiatives.
Cases of rape have reduced by over 10 per cent from 2,141 cases in 2023 to 1,919 cases in 2024. Also, cases of molestation decreased drastically from 2,345 to 1,897, representing a decline of 19 per cent. Reports of eve-teasing also decreased, and this time with a reduction from 381 cases reported in 2023 down to 343 cases in 2024, representing nearly 10 per cent. Cybercrime-related offences under the IT Act saw the steepest fall, with a decrease of 59 cases in 2023 to just 34 in 2024, thus more than a 42 per cent drop, the data shows.
“Such promising numbers are the result of a holistic approach by Delhi Police, marrying advanced technology with public outreach and victim-friendly support mechanisms. Major areas now remain under surveillance with the implantation of AI-powered surveillance systems, while self-defence workshops along with safety awareness campaigns empower women to protect themselves as well as know their rights better. Dedicated women’s help desks across the city have resulted in swift and sensitive responses to victims,” a senior official said.
Collaboration with municipal bodies has further buttressed these efforts. Measures such as street lighting, safe public transport, and the auditing of the public spaces have led to creating safer spaces for women. Training programmes for police officials have also been stepped up to make them more sensitive and more efficient in handling cases concerning women’s safety.
Apart from technological and infrastructural improvements, the police have established anonymous reporting platforms to encourage women to come forward without fear of stigma. Regular engagement with community members has ensured feedback, which has been incorporated into ongoing policies that have become more responsive to the realities faced by women in the city.
A senior police official stated that their mission goes beyond prevention, aiming to create an environment where women feel secure in all they do. Police continues to lead efforts to make the city safer for women through technology, community involvement.
