Delhi warms up to Super CM

Arvind Kejriwal who took oath as Delhi’s Chief Minister for the second time again hummed lines from an all-time Manna Dey classic at Ramlila Maidan from the film “Paigham” – “Insaan Ka Insaan Se ho Bhaichaara” (People should have brotherly relations, this is our message) but with an apology that he was not a good singer. He not only sought social harmony among communities but also thanked the selfless AAP volunteers drawn from across religious communities, caste and class, for the party’s resounding victory.

The AAP volunteers had decked up for the occasion well ahead of their leader it seems, as they gave him a thunderous applause as he came out of his house to head to Ramlila Ground, the place for swearing-in ceremony where about one lakh Delhiites had gathered for the occasion. Most of the attendees were devoted AAP volunteers who had played a crucial role in party’s victory in 2015 Assembly polls.

“The stories of AAP volunteers bring tears in my eyes. MLAs got fame and some have become ministries. What have those unseen faces got, who worked hard not for Kejriwal or AAP but for the better future of Delhi and nation,” Kejriwal told the crowd amid applause from the audience.

Volunteers danced their way to the oath-taking ceremony, exactly after a year he resigned from the position of Delhi’s Chief Minister after being in the government for 49 days.

Anna Hazare too greeted Arvind Kejriwal and said: “I had congratulated Arvind on the counting day as well. I again congratulate him for having taken oath as the Chief Minister. I am proud that one of our volunteers has formed the government in Delhi.”

A party member, involved in preparations for the ceremony at his residence in Kaushambi, said that since Kejriwal is down with fever, he has decided to go by car.

Senior leader and Kejriwal’s most trusted aide, Manish Sisodia, said AAP MLAs and ministers have not made any special preparation for the oath ceremony. “We have not stitched special dresses for the event. We are going to be our usual selves. None of our family members will have special seats, not even the MLAs,” he added.

On the way to the venue, people were seen trying to catch a glimpse of Kejriwal who waved at them. Whenever his car stopped at the traffic signal, he was seen smiling and waving to people. Media chased his cavalcade through the entire 15-km stretch from Kaushambi to Ramlila Maidan.

At the venue, hundreds of supporters sporting AAP caps were seen carrying placards with one of them with a message ‘I am AK-67’ conveying the number of seats won by Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal. As soon as Kejriwal took oath, the large number of people gathered at the Ramlila Maidan erupted in joy.

Lt Governor Najeeb Jung administered the oath of office to Manish Sisodia, Asim Ahmed Khan, Sandeep Kumar, Satyendar Jain, Gopal Rai and Jitender Singh Tomar. They took oath wearing AAP caps.

Around 3,000 security personnel had been deployed on all arterial roads leading to the venue. Metal detectors had also been installed in and around the ground, while 60 baggage scanners had been put in for the first time, said a police official.
