Delhi cop’s Meerut death turns murkier

Five days after the mysterious death of a head constable Sanjeev Kumar in Meerut, no headway has been made, even as more glaring loopholes appear in the Delhi police version of the incident.

On Sunday, UP police sources revealed to Millennium Post that the Wagon R car in which Sanjeev, Sachin, Vivek and an informer were travelling, was removed from the spot after the incident.

After two and a half hours, when the UP police was informed about the incident, the cops reached the crime scene and could not find the car.

Later, they asked the Delhi police to send the car back for further investigation. But Delhi police officials said the Special Staff team was not using Delhi police's vehicle but were travelling in a private vehicle. According to Delhi police, the owner of the vehicle has got every right to take the car back.

According to sources, Delhi police is also pressurising UP police to step aside. It is being alleged that Delhi police is waiting for the uproar created by media to subside to conduct further investigations.

Four teams of Delhi police and four teams of UP police are at present investigating the case.

Delhi police alleged the rearview mirror of the car was shot from outside. If that is the case, said UP police, the impact must have been felt elsewhere inside the car but there was no other gunshot mark inside the car. Sources also alleged that an empty shell of cartridge was recovered from inside the car.

According to UP police, Sanjeev, the head constable of south Delhi's special staff, was murdered. But Delhi police is standing firm that it was an instance of road rage.

On Friday, Vivek Gogia, Joint Commissioner of Police (South Western Range) said they have recreated the scene and examined the spot to gather information.

Based on that, Gogia claimed the incident appears to be a 'chance skirmish'.

But UP police claim there were no bloodstains inside the car while as per the allegations of other consatbles, when Sanjeev was taken to the hospital, he was lying down in the back seat. As per the postmortem reports, Sanjeev was shot on his chest, so he must have been bleeding at the time. On this, Gogia said  there was blood inside and outside the car.

Meanwhile, UP police is tracing the call details of all four who were present during the incident.

FAMILY FILES FIR

Sanjeev Kumar's father has filed an FIR in Kankarkheda police station against the other two constables who were with him during the incident. In his complaint, Sanjeev's father alleged the incident was preplanned and that Vivek Tomar and Sachin, the other constables, have conspired and murdered his son. 'A case against some unidentified persons have been registered,' said K Satyanarayan, SSP, Meerut.

Sanjeev's family alleged that since Sanjeev got the best beat officer award in February 2011 and was also present during the 'Satte-Bittu' encounter in 2009, his colleagues were jealous of him. Sanjeev's brother-in-law, who resides in Muzaffarnagar's Dhindhawali village, said, 'We approached the police station since we doubt the entire episode. We think Sachin and Vivek Tomar, who accompanied Sanjeev, are involved in the incident. And if not directly involved, they know what happened on that fateful day. The whole incident was staged.'

He added, 'We met the informer who accompanied the officers on the assignment. At first he said Sanjeev had no weapon on him but later, he accepted that he had a pistol.  We seriously doubt the whole story.'
