Delhi BJP promises onion commission

Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, Harsh Vardhan on Sunday blamed the ‘unholy nexus between ministers of Delhi government and traders’ for the prevailing onion crisis in the city.

He promised a Food Price Commission to ensure complete transparency through the use of latest technology if the party was voted back to power in the city. Vardhan said he would ensure steps such as construction of godowns, farmer’s market and GPS in trucks to develop a ‘Delhi Model’ to contain price rise in the city, if voted to power.

‘The central and Delhi government were in deep slumber and ignored the warning signals of price rise issued by agriculture ministry and market experts and let the situation reach where it is today,’ he said.

The BJP nominee further added that Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit blames hoarders but could not act against even a single hoarder in the city. ‘The data from ministry of agriculture reveals increase in production as compared to the previous year. It is only the nexus between ministers of Delhi government and traders who are artificially increasing the price of onion and other vegetables,’ he added.

He also hit back at Dikshit for her remark that she ate onions after one week, as ‘a cruel joke on the poor’ and said she has a habit of making such remarks.

Vardhan also criticised the UPA on inflation and said Union ministers say it is the responsibility of state to check prices but it was caused by central government’s ‘inaction, corruption and ineptitude’.
