Class Five girl student from EWS suspended for tying two ponytails

In an alleged episode of discrimination, a class 5 student of Mayo International School, belonging to EWS was suspended after her parents complained to authoroties about a teacher’s ‘humiliating’ behaviour towards their child. “On 21 November, a teacher slapped and humiliated her before the entire class for tying two ponytails. She has not been going to school for past one week”, said Mamta, mother of the child. She further said the teacher accused her of misbehaving with her when she went to school to ask her why she behaved in that manner. “Instead of apologising, she said I was making a fuss out of small issue”, Mamta added.

She also said she apologised to the principal and the teacher so as to avoid suspension of her daughter but to no avail. “We also wrote an apology letter. The school authorities said we should apologise before the entire school”, the mother alleged. The parents have also written a letter to Najeeb Jung asking school authorities to revoke the suspension order.

Criticising the school management, Ashok Agarwal, national president of All India Parents’ Association said, “Their action is absolutely illegal and illogical and in violation with the provisions of the RTE Act, 2009.” The school principal was unavailable for comment on the matter.
