‘Child rape victims should be given nursery admission under EWS’

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal has recommended a uniform policy to ensure a special quota for child rape victims in nursery admissions under Economic Weaker Section (EWS) category. She has also demanded the inclusion of the child rape victims in the nursery admissions for 2016-17.

“These children are the victims of utmost cruelty and are in urgent need of support from the Delhi government,” said Maliwal in a letter written on December 17.

She has mentioned a recent case where a seven-year-old girl was raped by a juvenile and is presently recuperating in AIIMS. The chairperson has also mentioned child rape cases like the gang-rape of 2.5 year old girl child on October 16 in West Delhi and a five year old girl in East Delhi. Maliwal has expressed serious concerns on the increasing victimisation of girl children.

“The doctors supervising the surgery of the five-year-old gang-rape victim told me that the child would need around two years to be normal,” said Maliwal. She further added that these girls often belong to very poor families and need help of the government.

Earlier, Maliwal had demanded the Delhi government to give jobs to acid attack victims and also provide economic support to them.

The rape of girl children has shockingly increased in the city as according to a report of the Delhi police on October 31 with 46 per cent of the total rape victims being minors. Delhi Police, however, included girls below 18 years in the broad category of minors but child rape cases have also increased significantly.
