Central Railway income soars 12.6% in 9 months of this fiscal

The Central Railway  has registered 12.6 per cent increase in its total apportioned income at Rs 7881 crore during the first three quarters of the current financial year (April-December), compared to Rs 7001 crore in the corresponding period of last year. Total passenger earnings were improved by 16.6 per cent at Rs 3057 crore, as compared to Rs.2622 crore achieved in corresponding period last year.

Describing Central Railway’s suburban system as Mumbai’s ‘lifeline,’ Central Railway General Manager Sunil Kumar Sood said total number of train services have now risen to 1618 trains per day, connecting 76 stations and carrying over 40 lakh passengers daily with 12-car trains on main line and trans-harbour line, besides sixteen 15-car suburban services on mainline section between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Kalyan stations.
The Central Railway introduced 11 new trains out of 12 announced in the railway budget 2013, while — to clear the extra rush of passengers —997 holiday special trains were run in 2013-14 till December 2013, besides 6046 coaches augmented temporarily to clear this rush, and punctuality of Mail/Express trains improved to 95 per cent as compared to 91.9 per cent last year.

He said Central Railway’s other successes included an award of ‘Certificate of Merit’ by the Ministry of Power for its success in Energy Conservation in the Zonal Railway Sector on Indian Railways. On the sports side, CR staff Lalita Babbar won the ‘Full Marathon’ and. Sudha Singh won the ‘Half Marathon’ in the women’s category in Mumbai Marathon held recently. 

Sood said the Central Railway ‘mission’ focus on passenger safety emphasized reducing fire incidents in running trains, dissuading commuters from performing stunts, rooftop and footboard travel, boarding and alighting from running train. Other ongoing efforts included works of raising platform height, escalators for physically-challenged and senior citizens set up at Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan, Pune, Nagpur and Dadar, besides battery-operated carts for the disabled, sick and senior citizens at Mumbai CST, Nagpur, Pune and Solapur stations.
