Cell phone, marijuana seized from Bhondsi jail inmate

In another incident of check conducted in Bhondsi jail, the jail authorities seized a mobile phone and 15 gram Marijuana from an inmate.

The inmate identified as Sunny (25), (son of Rajendra Singh), had gone to the Riwari court for his hearing. On his way back in the Bhondsi Jail, a mobile phone and marijuana was found in his possession.

In another incident, a local dealer was arrested on Tuesday for illegally carrying and distributing 450 gram marijuana. A case has been registered in Rahendra Park police station.

The intelligence had detected around 160 mobile phones operational in jail after which over twelve raids were conducted in the past three months and more than 30 mobile phones and several functional SIM cards were found.

Besides these phones, a total of 17 functional SIM cards, 16 phone batteries and three phone chargers have been seized by authorities till November.

“There have been regular raids conducted in the Bhondsi jail to seize all the mobile phones here. Two more were seized recently. Though, there are still many phones which are functional in jail, the authorities will soon nab the remaining mobile phones. The jail authorities have also tightened security to stop the entry of such devices in the jail,” said Anand Kumar, Station House Officer, Bhondsi police station.

The inmate has been booked on charges of penalty for introduction or removal of prohibited articles into or from prison and communication with prisoners under Section 42A of Prisons Act.

In August 2014, to control smuggling in prison, the Haryana government had added an Amendment to the Haryana Prisons Act 1894, but this seems to have absolutely no effect.

As per the Amendment, using communication devices on the jail premises was prohibited and anyone possessing the device could get up to three years of additional jail term.
