Budget to bring cheers to Urdu teachers

This budget session could bring a lot of cheer to Urdu teachers in Delhi. The long battle of ad hoc Urdu teachers employed in various government institutions for increasing their salary with Delhi government's Directorate of Education would likely to be cleared in the forthcoming annual budget session of Delhi.

Nearly 117 part-time teachers are working with Delhi government. They, however, have been complaining that there exists a huge parity between their salaries and that of regular teachers.

The Urdu teachers lamented that after spending around 20 years in teaching, they were still getting meagre salary ranging from Rs 5,000-9,000.

They demanded that at least 50 per cent of the salaries of regular teachers, which starts at Rs 21,745, should be given to them.

In September 2010, Delhi high court ordered Delhi state government, Directorate of Education, Department of Arts, Culture and Language and Delhi Urdu Academy to clear the dues of the teachers and pay them arrears from 2000. Since nothing was done by the government in this regard, 64 teachers filed a complaint alleging contempt of court for not being given their dues within six months of the orders.

On 13 March 2012, high court had ordered the government bodies to fulfil their dues within eight weeks time.

According to sources, the Delhi government have to cough up around Rs 3 crore to Delhi Urdu Academy. If things go as planned in the Budget sessions, each teacher would receive around Rs 3.5 lakh.

Anees Azmi, secretary, Delhi Urdu Academy, said, 'We have already taken steps to follow the orders of the high court. We have already paid the teachers Rs 50,000, each and from April we have increased their salary as well.'

After the hike in the salary, the ad hoc Urdu teachers get Rs 11,160 (for PGT grade teachers) and Rs 13,460 (for TGT grade).

Sources in the Delhi government said, the government is ready to shell out the money, but due to some formalities and the high amount involved they have asked for some time.

Meanwhile, sources close to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the CM has assured Urdu teachers that there would be a lot of benefits for them in the coming budget.
