There is fresh trouble for the Congress, thanks to over-enthusiasm of power distribution company BSES. The election commission has issued notice for using electricity bills for publicising the achievements of the government without taking its permission despite the Model Code of Conduct being in place.
In a show cause notice issued by district election officer Krishna Mohan Uppu of East Delhi district to chief executive officer (CEO) of the power distribution company in the area, the later has been asked to reply within 24 hours.
‘You are directed to show cause on why action should not be recommended against you to the competent authority for violation of Model Code and provisions of Representation of People Act 1951. Your reply should reach this office within 24 hours of receipt of this notice failing which it will be presumed that you have nothing to say in this matter and necessary action as per law will be taken,’ said the notice issued on 28 October. The bills depicting the advertisements were issued between 4 to 14 October. The model code of conduct was announced on 4 October.
On the bills issued to consumers, pictures have been published showing the minister for power in Delhi government Haroon Yusuf laying the foundation stone for BRPL 66/11 KV grid in Meethapur in South Delhi on 16 September this year. In the picture local MP Ramesh Kumar and MLA Ram Singh Netaji are also seen.
A comparison has also been made between power tariffs of Delhi and neighbouring areas, besides Mumbai, Hyderabad and other cities to defend the claim of the Delhi government that power tariff in Delhi is less.
‘It’s a clearly violation of model code of conduct and evidence that Delhi government is misusing various authorities to get votes. The government has 49 percent share in the power companies’ said Harsh Vardhan, the chief ministerial candidate of Delhi BJP.
