The BJP has turned the table in Delhi by winning all the seven MP seats from Congress. The latter that had won all the seven seats in 2009 could not even manage a runner-up position even on a single seat.
Besides winning all the seven seats by a huge margin, the BJP also increase its vote share by around 13 percent compared to the Delhi assembly elections around six months back. The party has got 46.4 percent vote in this election which was 33.07 percent in Delhi assembly elections.Â
In the undercurrent of Modi in the national capital, which was earlier rejected by his political rivals, BJP maintained lead from the first round of counting to the last round of counting at all the seats. Sensing their defeat, most of the Congress MPs did not turn up at the counting centres.Â
Senior BJP leaders also believe that their win was largely due to AAP but credited it to positive voting. However, the results reveal that BJP benefited due to triangular contest and division of votes between the AAP and Congress coupled with the humungous Modi wave.Â
In Chandni Chowk, BJP's Harsh Vardhan got 4.36 lakh votes, followed by AAP's Ashutosh with 3.00 lakh votes and Congress's Kapil Sibal got 1.75 lakh votes. The total votes polled to Congress and AAP at Chandni Chowk are 39,668 more than the votes polled to BJP. While on West Delhi seat BJP's Parvesh Verma, who has got highest winning margin of 3.69 lakh votes got 85,000 votes more than the collective votes of AAP and Congress. Congress candidate Mahabal Mishra could not save his security and got only 1,93,266 votes.
'The votes are never added in this way. People have rejected AAP as they were exposed to their misrule of 49 days in the city. If Delhi assembly elections happen, we will get clear majority in Delhi assembly too,’ said Harsh Vardhan, Delhi BJP president. 'AAP made false promises to the people and now people know they can't live upto their expectations,' he added.
In the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009, Congress had won all the seven seats in the city which was quite rejoicing for the Congress. At that time Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit was the face of the party in Delhi. The oldest political party of the country has been shattered by this defeat which was coupled with their loss during the MCD election in 2012, and 2013 Delhi assembly elections.
