Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally given in to the pressure being exerted by powerful Jat leader and younger brother of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, Azad Singh. By declaring him the party candidate from Mundka seat, Verma’s assembly constituency, BJP has virtually accepted him as the ‘true heir’ of Verma’s political legacy.
Millennium Post was the first to report on 11 November in its news report titled: ‘For party’s sake! Manoj Shokeen willing to change assembly seat’, that Shokeen, the sitting MLA from Mundka, who was given a party ticket for the second time from the seat, had shown his willingness to change his seat from Mundka to Nangloi Jat to broker peace.
On Friday evening, the party decided to shift Shokeen to Nangloi Jat and nominated Azad Singh from Mundka.Â
After a lengthy meeting that took place under the chairmanship of party’s national president Rajnath Singh, Azad Singh was handed over the party’s symbol to file his nomination from Mundka seat at 4 pm on Friday.
‘I am very happy with the decision of the party. I will try my best to secure maximum seats for BJP from North Delhi Municipal Corporation area,’ Singh told Millennium Post.
Azad, incumbent mayor of North DMC had sent his resignation to Rajnath after he was denied party ticket, but his resignation was rejected. Azad, who had refused to campaign for the party after being denied a ticket, claimed on Friday evening that apart from ensuring his own victory from Mundka, he will also ensure victory on 17-18 other seats.
Azad, who resembles his elder brother in terms of looks, has also grown a grey beard, which gives him greater similarity with the former chief minister. According to sources, Azad also has ambitions to become a minister if the BJP is voted to power, but laughed when directly asked about it.
