BJP had achieved only nine seats in 2008 from 32 assembly segments, where there is a significant rural population. This time, it has managed to win 20 seats, while the Congress came down from 21 seats in 2008 to just two seats.
Of the 30 seats in three parliamentary constituencies, west Delhi, north-west Delhi and Chandni Chowk, Congress had got 20 seats in 2008, while the BJP had managed eight seats. However, this time the BJP has achieved 14 seats from this area.
The party wrested the Najafgarh seat from independent strongman Bharat Singh for the first time but lost Sikh-dominated Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar, for the first time in the history of Delhi assembly. Similarly, BJP lost Rohini and Shalimar Bagh urban seats, which it has consecutively maintained since 1993.
The saffron party also performed well on rural seats of south Delhi parliamentary constituency by getting seven out of ten seats, including Badarpur, which it wrested from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). BSP had won both Badarpur and Gokulpur seats in 2008. However, this time they were unable to open its account, as both seats went to the BJP.
